Orientation/Familarisation
Students arriving are usually new to the country and need special attention to feel welcome. Hands on training on how to make their beds, use the oven, stove, washing machine, etc, will be introduced in the early stages of a student’s stay in order to help ease them into the household. Given that the owners live on site, management is on duty 24-hours to assist the students. As soon as possible, students are shown how to:
- get to their schools/ universities/ Tafe colleges
- use public transport
- set up bank accounts if applicable
- set up and be connected to their high speed internet
- set up APPS on their mobile for street directions
- use the facilities in the household
- understand the established household rules.
Maintenance of the Household
Cleanliness of the household is critical as the owners have a responsibility for the health and safety of the students. The owners are fully trained in occupational health and safety as required by Australian regulations.
- All common areas of the house (ie., recreation rooms, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, etc) are kept clean and tidy at all times. A professional cleaner comes in once a week to carry out general cleaning
- Students are responsible for keeping their own rooms clean and tidy
Electricity/Gas/Water
- Electricity, gas and water are included in the weekly rates. The students are made aware that when they are not in their rooms, all lights must be switched off.
- In Melbourne we have low rainfall all year round and water is a very precious resource. Students are asked to limit their showers to once a day and to a maximum of 4-6 minutes.
Contactable at all times
Students have access to owners at all times, especially in the case of an emergency situation.
Interstate/International Travel
Prior arrangements will need to be made with owners if a student ( especially an under 18 student) has to make an interstate or overseas trip.
Religious Facilities
Depending on their religious background, students are guided and shown where their places of worship are in Melbourne. They are encouraged to practice their religion while away from home.
Relaxation and Recreation
Students have access to a large common area for relaxation where they can play table tennis, board games and hold social events, etc. There is an outdoor barbeque area for use in the warmer months. There are two sitting areas for watching DVDs, television and holding karaoke sessions. During weekends and holidays, the owners organise day trips with the students which may include activities like going to the movies, shopping, scenic drives, picnics, bowling,
swimming, eating out, walks in the park and much more
